Aadhar Card: Give Rs. 500 and Get Data in 10 Minutes, UIDAI Says All Info Safe

As per the reports released it was stated that now anyone can get the Aadhar Card data of billions of citizens in 10 minutes just by giving Rs.500. The FIR regarding Aadhar Data Breach has been filed at Mohali (Jalandhar) from where the “purchase” of access to Aadhaar data was reported.

To contradict this report the UIDAI Says that All Info is Safe and nothing has been stolen. There is no scheme like “Give Rs.500 and Get Aadhar Card Data in 10 Minutes”.

What was reported in the media report?

Investigations by The Tribune reveal that the racket may have started around six months ago, when some anonymous groups were created on WhatsApp. These groups targeted over three lakh village-level enterprise (VLE) operators hired by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (ME&IT) under the Common Service Centres Scheme (CSCS) across India, offering them access to UIDAI data.

UIDAI clarifies the matter:

While clarifying the matter Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has given a statement and said that this is not an actual report.

The UIDAI authorities have also stated that the information regarding Aadhaar data breaches is totally mistaken and the Aadhaar data including biometric information is fully safe and secure.

What the actual matter is?

On Thursday the authorities of UIDAI have accepted that they have given the search authorities to the designated personnel and state government officials with the purpose to help citizens in getting information just by entering their Aadhaar number/EID.

A proper log has been maintained by the UIDAI and also the authorities have the traceability facility. If in case any sort of miss use happens then it will be traces at the same moment and appropriate action will be taken in regard.

Is Aadhaar Information not safe?

Kiran Jonnalagadda, cofounder at tech discussion forum Has Geek and Internet Freedom Foundation, has also stated that the Aadhaar system is insecure. He said “The backdoor has already been opened. It is quite easy to hack into their as the backdoor has already been opened. It is quite easy to hack into their systems and the stolen demographic identities can be misused in a lot of ways,”

On that an Officer working in Government department related to Aadhar state that no leak has been happened and even no information regarding it has been received yet.

What is Aadhar?

Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique identification number that is issued by the UIDAI to every resident Indian citizen, after recording biometric and demographic information about an individual.

Since the government’s autonomous admittance to citizens’ biometric particulars has already been in the centre of much debate in the civil society.

What action has been taken?

The authorities of UIDAI Stated “As UIDAI maintains a complete log and traceability of the facility, the legal action including lodging of FIR against the persons involved in the instant case is being done,”

This is not the first time that the issue of Aadhaar breach has raised. The personal details of several Aadhar Users were available on many central and state government website and the number was 200.  When the authorities checked the same the information found true and then the information get removed.

There is nothing to steal from Aadhaar Card:

Aadhaar number is not a secret number. This has to be shared with the authorized agencies at the time when Aadhaar holders want to get the benefit of government welfare scheme/s or other services.

But that does not mean that the proper use of Aadhaar number poses a security or financial threat.

The Aadhaar card has to be linked with bank accounts, permanent account numbers (PAN), financial services like public provident fund (PPF), national savings certificates (NSC), Kisan Vikas Patra, mobile phone numbers (SIMs) and insurance policies, among other things. The deadline for linking Aadhaar card with all these services is March 31, 2018.
