Civil Services Exam Pattern and Preparation 2014

Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the civil service examination every year. Civil Services are those services which everyone wants to do, but it is not an easy task to get selected in civil services. The exam conducted by the UPSC for civil services are very difficult to crack.

Civil Service Examination is divided into two parts:

  • Preliminary examination(Written)
  • Main examination(Written & Interview)

Preliminary examination- The Preliminary examination covers the following of two objective-type papers:

  • General Studies
  • Aptitude Test

Main examination – Only those candidates appear main examination who had clear Preliminary examination. The main examination covers the following types:

General Studies Paper – I 200 Marks
General Studies Paper – II 200 Marks

Civil Service Main Exam Pattern

Paper-I One of the Indian Languages to be selected by the candidate from the 18 languages included in the VIIIth Schedule to the Constitution (Qualifying Paper) 300 Marks
Paper-II English (Qualifying Paper) 300 Marks
Paper-III Essay 200 Marks
Papers IV & V General Studies (300 Marks for each paper) 600 Marks
Papers VI, VII, VIII & IX Any two subjects (each having 2 papers) to be selected from the prescribed optional subjects (300 marks for each paper) 1200 Marks
Total Marks for Written Examination 2000 Marks
Interview Test 300 Marks
Grand Total 2300 Marks

Eligibility for Civil Service Examination Interview- The final stage is interview. Candidates who clear the preliminary and the main test are called for the Interview.

Nationality- Candidates who appear in Civil Service Examination should be a citizen of India or a subject of Nepal and Bhutan or a Tibetan Refugee and a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, East African countries who came over to India for the purpose of settling in India.

Age Limit- Candidates who appear Civil Service Examination they must be above 21 years and below 30 years. Relaxation will be applied according to the government rules.

Education Qualification-

  • Candidates need to have degree from Central, State or Deemed University/ Open University/ Distance Education.
  • A qualification recognized by the Government of India.
