After the preparation of syllabus the hard copy or the electronic copy is sent to the teachers in order to remind them about the course contents.

A syllabus is just like a guide that helps the teacher and student to get the proper knowledge of all the important topics. It helps the students to know about the subject in detail, why it is a part of their course of study, what are the expectations from students, consequences of failure, etc. It contains general rules, policies, instructions, topics covered, assignments, projects, test dates, and so on.

At the time of defining the curriculum the statement that can be said is that it is a guideline of the chapters and academic content covered by an educational system while undergoing a particular course or program.

The school or college authorities decide the Curriculum. Curriculum includes the knowledge, attitude, behavior, manner, performance and skills that must be added to a student from teachers. Curriculum contains the teaching methods, lessons, assignments, physical and mental exercises, activities, projects, study material, tutorials, presentations, assessments, test series, learning objectives, and so on.

Key Differences between Syllabus and Curriculum

Some of the basic differences between Syllabus and Curriculum are:

  • The syllabus is described as the summary of the topics covered or units to be taught in the particular subject. Curriculum refers to the overall content, taught in an educational system or a course.
  • The contents of syllabus are different for each teacher where as the contents of curriculum are same for all.
  • Syllabus is a Greek originated word whereas curriculum is a Latin origin.
  • In comparison of syllabus, there is a wider scope of curriculum
  • The syllabus is provided to the students by the teachers so that they can take an interest in the subject. On the other hand, normally the curriculum is not made available to the students unless specifically asked for.
  • If we talk about the Syllabus then it is descriptive in nature whereas curriculum is prescriptive in nature.
  • Each subject has its own syllabus. Curriculum covers a particular course of study or a program.
  • Curriculum has a vast content and it is prepared by the government or the school or college administration while on the other hand Syllabus is prepared by teachers
  • Syllabus has a duration of 1 year or 06 months whereas curriculum lasts according to the duration of the course
