Ugadi is a day of joy and merriment and comes with the aspirations and belief that the joy of this day would foreshadow the course of events for coming year. Ugadi festival is also known with various other names such as Yugadi, Chandramana Varsha Thodaku, Chandramana Ugadi, and Vatsara Arambha.
People on this day use to get up early and wear new clothes and they use to decorate their houses with fresh flowers and tied festoons of mangoe(torana) to the doors. Usually the eldest member of house performs the Ugadi puja. Fresh flowers and incense sticks adorn the altar in the households. There are a set of customs and traditions that are observed on this special day.
One special kind of ‘Chutney’ called Ugadi pachadi is to be prepared on this day, during the Ugadi festival.This chutney is kept in an earthen pot before the elder members of the family and thereafter, puja is performed and everyone takes the share of the chutney and has the feasts and meals together.
Other traditional cuisine of this festival includes dishes like Pulihora and Bobbatlu and additional typical dishes associated with the festival. These dishes are prepared with jaggery, raw mangoes, neem flowers and raw tamarind.
