Role of Vice-President:

  • The Vice-President of India is the second uppermost constitutional office in the Indian Government after the President.
  • He is also the Speaker of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Parliament of India.
  • The Vice President is elected by an electoral college consisting of all the elected members.
  • Once elected the Vice President continues in office for a five-year term, but can continue in office notwithstanding of the expiry of the term, until a successor assumes office.
  • The Vice President can be removed by a resolution passed by an effective majority in the Rajya Sabha.

Dr. Hamid Ansari was the Vice President of India. He was elected as Vice President of India from 11 August 2007 to 11 August 2017. He was born in Calcutta West Bengal, India. He was a Professor and Vice-Chancellor of the Aligarh Muslim University. After the nomination for the Vice President post he resigned from NCM chairman post.
