Grants for higher education in India are provided by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Before granting the grant, the UGC was required to verify the criteria of universities and colleges. To fulfill this, the UGC established the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in the year 1994. NAAC is an autonomous organization fully funded by UGC. How do Colleges and Universities get NAAC Accreditation?

There are three steps that are involved in gaining the NAAC Accreditation. Universities or Colleges that are affiliated to University Grants Commission can all apply for NAAC accreditation. The detailed process is given below:

1) NAAC Grading Criteria & System:

(a) NAAC Parameters: NAAC assess the Higher Education Institutions based on the following parameters:

• Research and Innovations
• Teaching-Learning & Evaluation
• Infrastructure & Resources
• Curricular Aspects
• Leadership & Management
• Student Progression
• Institutional Values

(b) NAAC Grading System: NAAC gave grade to higher learning institutes based on these parameters. The grades are divided into four categories: A,B, C and D and performance marks are given in the form of very good, good, satisfactory, and unsatisfactory. Final result is displayed in the form of CGPA.

2) NAAC Re-Assessment:

Institutes that are NAAC accredited and wants any kind of improvement in their accredited status can go for Re-Assessment process. Reaccreditation is applied one year later on.
