History of Steel Authority of India

  • The origins of SAIL started with the establishment of Hindustan Steel Private Limited on 19.01.1954.
  • It was established to provide basic facilities for the industrialization of the country.
  • Initially this was done for the management of Rourkela Steel Plant.
  • Whose first registered office was located in New Delhi which was later shifted to Kolkata in 1956 and Ranchi in 1959.
  • Later on Hindustan Steel Private Limited was also entrusted with the management of the steel plant located at Bhilai along with Rourkela.
  • In this process, steel factories located at Bokaro, Durgapur and Burnpur were also included in the management.
  • Simultaneously, the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) was formed.
  • Under this, five integrated and three special steel and iron factories were included.
  • SAIL was reorganized in the year 1978.
  • The Government of India holds 75 percent stake in SAIL.
