How SMTP Works ?
SMTP provides a set of code that simplifies the communication of email messages between email servers (network computers that handle incoming and outgoing emails). It is a kind of shorthand that allows a server to break up different parts of a message into categories that other servers can understand. When you send a message, it turns into strings of text that are separated by code words (or numbers) that identify the purpose of each section.
SMTP provides those codes, and email server software is designed to understand what they mean. As each message travels towards its destination, it sometimes passes through several computers as well as their individual MTAs. As it passes, it is stored briefly before moving to the next computer in the path. Think of it as a letter written with different hands as it makes its way to the right mailbox.

Submission of Mail: Mail client sends full mail to SMTP server using SMTP over TCP port 25.
Delivery of Mail: The SMTP server divides the recipient mail address into two parts: the recipient’s username and the domain name. For example, [email protected], where “Rocky” is the recipient’s username and gmail.com is the domain name.
If the sender and recipient’s domain name are the same, the SMTP server directs the email toward the POP3 server for the domain using the delivery agent. If their domain names are different, the mail submission agent (MSA) sends mail to the mail transfer agent (MTA), who searches the MX records from the domain name system to obtain the recipient’s domain. The MX record contains information about the user’s domain and IP address. Once the domain is located, the MTA connects to the Exchange server to transfer mail.
Receipt and Processing of Mail: After receiving the incoming message, the Exchange server transfers the message to the incoming server (Mail delivery agent), which holds the mail until the user receives it.
Access and Retrieval of Mail: Emails stored in MDA are retrieved using MUA (Mail User Agent), which can be accessed using login ID and password.
