The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), the Indian Space Agency, was established in 1969 to develop an independent Indian space program. It is headquartered in Bangalore (Bengaluru).

Space Research Center in India
- Vikram Sarabhai Space Center – V.S.S.C
This space research center is located at a place called Thumba of Trivandrum (Thiruvananthapuram). It has two more centers – – i) Valiyamala ii) Vottiyurkavu. Alwai has ammonium percolate experiment plant. VSSC is the largest center of ISRO (ISRO – Indian Space Research Institute). The center is dedicated to the development of Satellite Launch Vehicle using native technology. There is also a Space Physics Laboratory under the VSSC.
- ISRO Satellite Center (ISRO Satellite Center – ISAC)
This center is located in Bangalore. Design, testing and other work related to the satellite being prepared for scientific, technology and other purposes is done here. Aryabhata, Bhaskar, Apple and IRS-1A satellites were built at this center. The satellites of IRS and INSAT series are made here.
- SHAR Center
This center is located on Sriharikota Island in Andhra Pradesh. Sattelite Launch Vehicle (SLV) and rockets are the main focus in space. The country’s largest Propellant Booster Plant (SPROB) is also located here. This center is fully computerized.
- Liquid Propulsion Systems Center
Under this center a system related to the release of spacecraft is developed. There is a center in Bangalore for this. The second center is in Thiruvananthapuram where work related to Launch Vehicle Propalsan System is done. The main testing and research center is at a place called Mahendragiri in Tamil Nadu.
- Space Applications Center
This center is located in Ahmedabad. All kinds of research related to space technology are conducted here. This center prepares the outline of new projects. Research on R&D related to TV, telecommunications also continues.
- Development and Educational Communications Unit – DICU
This center is located in Ahmedabad. It is dedicated to the research and development of various software related to space and telecommunications. This center is also known for training the employees of Doordarshan and for studies related to the use of space technology.

Why Does India Need A New Space Station?
The new space station will be important for the launch of ISRO’s upcoming Small Satellite Launch Vehicle – SSLV.
The PSLV is designed to launch satellites into polar and earth orbits.
- However, it cannot enter polar or earth orbit directly after launch because its trajectory has to avoid flying over Sri Lanka due to the possibility of a rocket falling or a remnant.
- So once the rocket has taken flight from Sriharikota, to save it from Sri Lanka it first flies east and then moves back towards the South Pole.
- This process requires more fuel
After the establishment of the new space station at Thoothukudi, SSLV will fly over Lakshadweep and travel around Sri Lanka with a higher altitude.
