History of BSF:

By 1965, the State Armed Police Battalion was guarding the borders. When Pakistan attacked Sardar Post, Chhar Bet and Beria Bet in 1965, the state armed police were not able to handle the situation. Therefore, the Government of India planned to set up an armed and trained Border Security Force. Following the recommendations of the Committee of Secretaries, the BSF was established on 1 December 1965 to ensure the security of the borders and to handle the issues related to the borders. The first chief of BSF was Shri KF Rustamji.

• Every year, it contributes several BSF personnel to the UN mission services.
• During the Kargil War in May-July 1999, the BSF helped the Army defend the Kargil Hills and won the war.
• BSF has emerged as an elite power of the country. It made a difference in the 1971 war with Pakistan. Its ethos is “Any Action, Anytime, Anywhere” and its motto is “Duty Unto Death”.
• BSF personnel restore peace and brotherhood among people during communal unrest in Gujarat.
• When there was an earthquake in Gujarat in 2001, the BSF personnel were the first to reach there and helped the people in distress and saved lives.
