Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is an all India examination which is organized for admission in various post-graduate education programs. GATE Exam Pattern will assist you in knowing about marking scheme, time duration, number of questions asked in the examination. Aspirants who are willing to take admission in M.E., M. Tech, Direct  Ph. D programmes in IITs, NITs, GFTI and various private institutions may go through GATE Paper Structure which is given on this page. Graduate Aptitude Test in engineering consists of total 65 questions carrying 100 marks. GATE Online Exam is going to be organized in first week of February 2018 (Saturdays & Sundays). This exam is organized by seven zonal IITs and an IISc on rotation basis. Graduate Aptitude Test in engineering is a computer based test (CBT). Candidate will be given a computer to answer the questions displayed on the screen. The main motto of conducting GATE exam is to test and core subject knowledge of the candidates in applied courses’ subjects. Graduate Aptitude Test in engineering Exam Pattern consist the overall structure of the question paper. It consists of two different type of question like multiple choice questions (MCQ) and numerical answer questions. What is New in GATE 2018:

  • The GATE Scores validity has been valid from 2 years to 3 years.
  • All aspirants would have to be made online on GATE Online Application Processing System website.
  • There is no need to submit any Hard Copy.
  • GATE 2018 Examination Fees are to be made through SBI I-collect, Axis Bank I-Connect, e-challan facilities or debit cards /credit cards / net banking.

Types of Questions in GATE 2018:

For XE Paper:

Aspirants appearing XE paper has to attempt the following sections:

Section A:

 Engineering Mathematics (compulsory section):

It comprise of 11 questions (7 questions of 1 mark and 4 questions of 2 marks).

GA – General Aptitude

Any two of XE sections B to H:

These sections comprise of 22 questions (9 questions carrying 1 mark and 13 questions carrying 2 marks).

For XL Paper:

It consists of following sections.

Section P

 Chemistry (compulsory section):

It comprise of 15 questions from which 5 questions are of 1 mark while remaining 10 questions are of 2 marks each.

GA – General Aptitude

Any two of XL sections Q to U –

These sections comprise of 20 questions from which 10 questions are of 1 mark each while remaining 10 questions are of 2 marks each.

XL Paper of GATE comprise of following sections:

For GG Paper:

  • Question paper will consist of two parts i.e. Part A and Part B.
  • Part A is common for all aspirants while Part B has 2 sections, from which Section-1 is of Geology and Section-2 is of Geophysics.
  • In Part A, there are total 25 of 1 mark each while in Part B there are 30 questions of 2 marks each.

Point to be noted:

Despite of core subject of paper, General Aptitude (GA) is common section in each paper of Graduate Aptitude Test in engineering.

Marking Scheme:

  • There is a provision of negative marking in GATE for multiple choice questions but remember, for Numerical answer type questions, there is no negative marking.
  • For 1-mark question, 1/3 mark will be deducted for wrong answers.
  • For 2 marks question, 2/3 marks will be deducted as negative marking.

Do You Know Who Conduct GATE Exam?

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is conducted mutually by the Indian Institute of Science and seven Indian Institutes of Technology that is: (Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee) on behalf of the National Coordination Board: GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India. Now this year, Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is organized by IIT, Roorkee.

Design of Questions in the GATE 2018 Paper:

  • The questions are designed to examine the following abilities of a contender:
  • Recall: Based on facts, principles, formulae or laws of the discipline of the paper
  • Comprehension: These questions will test the candidate’s understanding of the basics of his/her field
  • Application: Candidate is expected to apply his knowledge either through computation or by logical reasoning
  • Analysis and synthesis: Candidate have to present with data, diagrams, images etc. that require analysis before a question can be answered.
