What is the purpose behind GATE Examination?

Graduate Aptitude Test in engineering is a computer based test (CBT). Candidate will be given a computer to answer the questions displayed on the screen. The main motto of conducting GATE exam is to test and core subject knowledge of the candidates in applied courses’ subjects.

Aspirants who are willing to take admission in M.E., M. Tech, Direct Ph. D programmes in IITs, NITs, GFTI and various private institutions have to clear the GATE Examination.

GATE 2018 paper patterns consists two different types of questions:

  • Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ)
  • Numerical Answer Questions

  • There will be 65 questions in the examination
  • Total marks given to candidates to complete the examination will be 100
  • Total time given to candidates to complete the examination will be 3 hours (180 minutes)
  • Negative marking will also be there in the examination as:
    • For 1-mark MCQs, 1/3 mark will be deducted for every incorrect attempt.
    • In case of 2-mark MCQs, the candidate will be penalized 2/3 mark for wrong attempt

Note: Despite of core subject of paper, General Aptitude (GA) is common section in each paper of Graduate Aptitude Test in engineering.

Exam Pattern Of GATE For XE Paper:

Aspirants appearing XE paper has to attempt the following sections:

Section A Engineering Mathematics (compulsory section) – contains 11 questions (7 questions of 1 mark and 4 questions of 2 marks)
GA General Aptitude
Any two of XE sections B to H contains 22 questions (9 questions carrying 1 mark and 13 questions carrying 2 marks)

GATE Exam Pattern 2018 For XL Paper:

Section P Chemistry (compulsory section) – It contains 15 questions (5 questions of 1 marks and 10 questions of 2 marks)
GA General Aptitude
Any two of XL sections Q to U It contains 20 questions (10 questions of 1 mark and 10 questions of 2 marks)

Exam Pattern Of GATE 2018 For GG Paper:

  • Question paper will consist of two parts i.e. Part A and Part B.
  • Part A is common for all aspirants while Part B has 2 sections, from which Section-1 is of Geology and Section-2 is of Geophysics.
  • In Part A, there are total 25 of 1 mark each while in Part B there are 30 questions of 2 marks each.

Pattern Of GATE Exam – Marking Scheme:

  • There is a provision of negative marking in GATE for multiple choice questions but remember, for Numerical answer type questions, there is no negative marking.
  • For 1-mark question, 1/3 mark will be deducted for wrong answers.
  • For 2 marks question, 2/3 marks will be deducted as negative marking.

Conducting Authorities of GATE Exam?

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is conducted mutually by the Indian Institute of Science and seven Indian Institutes of Technology that is: (Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee)

The examination gets conducted on behalf of the National Coordination Board: GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), and Government of India.  Now this year, Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is organized by IIT, Roorkee.

Design of Questions in the GATE 2018 Paper:

The questions are designed to examine the following abilities of a contender:

RecallBased on facts, principles, formulae or laws of the discipline of the paper
ComprehensionThese questions will test the candidate’s understanding of the basics of his/her field
ApplicationCandidate is expected to apply his knowledge either through computation or by logical reasoning
Analysis and synthesisCandidate has to present the ansewrs with data, diagrams, images etc. that require analysis before a question can be answered.
