Paper Pattern Of GATE Exam 2019 consist the overall structure of the question paper. It consist two different types of questions like Multiple Choice Questions and numerical. MCQ’s are qualifying in nature having four options, out of which you need to choose one correct option.

General Aptitude

Subject – Specific section
General Aptitude SectionThe paper will consist of a mandatory General Aptitude (GA) section which will have 10 questions.
5 of the questions will be of 1 mark and the remaining 5 will be of 2 marks.
Therefore, the total marks for this section will be 15 marks.
Marking Scheme1 mark MCQs – 1/3 mark will be deducted for every wrong answer.
2 mark MCQs – 2/3 mark will be deducted for every wrong response.
Zero marks will be awarded for un attempted questions.

No negative marking will be done for Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions.

GATE Paper Pattern 2019:

  • There will be 65 questions in the examination.
  • Total marks given to candidates to complete the examination will be 100.
  • Total time given to candidates to complete the examination will be 3 hours (180 minutes) as per GATE Exam Pattern.
  • Negative Marking will also be there in the examination as:
  1. For 1-mark MCQs, 1/3 mark will be deducted for every incorrect attempt.
  2. In case of 2-mark MCQs, the candidate will be penalized 2/3 mark for wrong attempt

GATE New Paper Structure For XE Paper:

Aspirants appearing XE paper has to attempt the following sections:


General Aptitude
Section AEngineering Mathematics (compulsory section) – contains 11 questions (7 questions of 1 mark and 4 questions of 2 marks)
Any two of XE sections B to H

contains 22 questions
(9 questions carrying 1 mark and 13 questions carrying 2 marks)

GATE Exam Pattern 2019 For XL Paper:


General Aptitude

(5 questions of 1 marks and 10 questions of 2 marks)
Any two of XL sections Q to U

 It contains 20 questions
(10 questions of 1 mark and 10 questions of 2 marks)

GATE XE Exam Pattern 2019:

  • The General Aptitude section will contain 5 questions of 1 Mark and 5 questions of 2 marks.
  • Question paper other than GG, XE and XL will contain 25 questions of 1 mark and 30 questions of 2.

Exam Pattern Of GATE 2019 For GG Paper:

  • Question paper will consist of two parts i.e. Part A and Part B.
  • Part A is common for all aspirants while Part B has 2 sections, from which Section-1 is of Geology and Section-2 is of Geophysics.
  • In Part A, there are total 25 of 1 mark each while in Part B there are 30 questions of 2 marks each.

GATE Exam Pattern 2019 consist two different types of questions. The GATE Exam Paper Pattern for both the examination is quite similar but there are some minor differences that we have stated below. For now let’s take a look over the GATE 2019 Exam Pattern.

Multiple Choice Questions

Numerical Questions
These questions carry 1 or 2 marks each in all papers and sections.These questions carry 1 or 2 marks each in all papers and sections.
They are objective in nature with a choice of four answers, out of which the candidate has to mark the correct answer(s).The answer for these questions is a real number
These questions carry 1 or 2 marks each in all papers and sections.There will be no choices given for these questions

Candidates must key in the answer using the virtual keypad (The keyboard of the computer will be disabled).

GATE Exam Pattern With Marks 2019:

From the total of 100 marks, there will be 10 questions of 15 marks covering the entire General Aptitude section (Language and Analytical Skills).

General Aptitude

 5 Questions of 2 Marks each and 5 Questions

of 1 Marks each.

Engineering Mathematics will cover approximately 15% weightage out of 100
marks for the paper bearing codes AE, AG, BT, CE,
CH, CS, EC, EE, IN, ME, MN, MT, PE, PI, TF and XE.
Engineering Mathematics 5 Questions of 2 Marks each and 5 Questions
of 1 Marks each.
Remaining 70% weightage of total marks is acquired by
the subject of the paper.
Subject Knowledge 25 Questions of 2 Marks each and 20 Questions
of 1 Marks each.
For the paper codes
AR, CY, EY, GG, MA, PH and XL

 The General Aptitude will cover 15% out of 100 marks,
and other 85% of the total question paper will be
covered by the subject of the paper.

GATE Exam Pattern – Negative Marking:

  • There is a provision of Negative Marking in GATE for multiple choice questions but remember, for Numerical answer type questions, there is no negative marking.
  • For 1-mark question, 1/3 mark will be deducted for wrong answers as per GATE Marking Scheme. For 2 marks question, 2/3 marks will be deducted as negative marking.
