About IES:

Recruitment to Indian Engineering Services is done through this combined competitive examination conducted by the Union Public Services Commission. The Examination constitutes of a written examination followed by an interview for the personality test. Some of the main disciplines in which exam is to be carried under UPSC IES / ESE Engineering Services Exam are as follows:

  • Civil Engineering (CE)
  • Electrical Engineering (EE)
  • Mechanical Engineering (ME)
  • Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering (E&T)

IES Exam Pattern

This is a 3 tier system which includes Preliminary / Stage-I (Objective Type Papers), Mains / Stage-II (Conventional Type Papers) and Personality Test that is stage –III, which consist of the screening process.  Those candidates who will be succeeded in qualifying Preliminary / Stage-I process will only be permitted to appear for Mains / Stage-II process of exam. Syllabus of ESE 2017 will include General Studies and Engineering Aptitude Paper which was only General ability paper before.

  • Weightage of conventional papers has been increased by 100 marks.
  • Weightage of objective papers has been reduced by 100 marks.
  • IES Exam Pattern 2017 will be of 1100 marks (written-objective+conventional) and 200 marks for personality test which will make the total; of 1300 marks.
  • Candidates who are yet having any confusions regarding exam pattern of ESE, may get the detailed paper pattern through below tabulated data.

Important Note:

  • The paper in General Studies and Engineering Aptitude will include Knowledge of relevant topics as may be expected from an engineering graduate, without special study.
  • Questions from all the 10 topics mentioned above shall be set. Marks for each Topic may range from 5% to 15% of the total marks in the paper.

Negative Marking Scheme:

  • There will be penalty (Negative Marking) for wrong answers marked by a candidate in the Objective test.
  • There are four alternative for the answers to every question.
  • For each question for which a wrong answer has been given by the candidate, one-third (0.33) of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted as penalty.
  • If more than one answer is marked for one question, it will be treated as a wrong answer even if one of the given answers happen to be correct and there will be same penalty as above for that question.
  • If a question is left blank i.e. no answer is given by the candidate, there will be no penalty for that question
  • No negative marking in conventional paper (subjective papers).
