Indian Economic Service Exam Pattern

The examination will be organized in two parts that are following below. These parts are further described below.

  • Part I- Written examination
  • Part II- Viva voce


Under Part- I exam is conducted in two sections. First is Indian Economic Service and other is Indian Statistical Service. The subjects of written examination under Part-I, the maximum marks allotted to each subject/ paper and the time allowed shall be as follows:

  • Under Statistics I and II Objective Type Questions will be asked. 80 questions with maximum marks of 200 in each paper have to be attempted in 120 minutes.
  • Under Statistics III & IV Descriptive Type question will be asked. Pattern of questions will be Short Answer/ Small Problems Questions and Long Answer and Comprehension problem. In Statistics-IV, equal number of questions.
  • General English and General Studies common to both Indian Economic Service and Indian Statistical Service will be of subjective type.
  • All other papers of Indian Economic Service will be of subjective type.
  • All question papers must be answered in English.
  • Question papers in all subjects in IES Exam and in ISC Exam will be of Conventional (essay) type except in Statistics Paper I & II that are Objective Type Papers.

Interview will be organized by a Board of competent and unbiased observers. The main purpose to organize interview is to check the skills of candidates for these services. The interview is planned to supplement the written examination for testing the general and specialized knowledge and abilities of applying aspirants. Questions of interview may also include questions based on events which are happening around candidates both within and outside their own State or Country. Viva voce of such candidates as may be called by the Commission carrying a maximum of 200 marks.
