History of NSDL:
As India, already has efficient capital markets but when paper based settlements of trade was carried out, the outputs generated are bad as there was delay in delivery. So, in August 1996 Depositories Act helps in establishment of National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL).
How NSDL Works?
NSDL was the first depository in India that was going through electronically and not paper-based. Securities held in the depository account are similar just as funds are deposit in the bank account. Now, the transference is done through accounts, thus reduces the risk of paperwork.
The securities such as shares or bonds are transferred in certificated form or in uncertificated form, so that transference can be done simply via book entry and avoiding the physical transfer of certificates.
