## Odd Man Out Series

Odd Man Out and Series – Aptitude Concept

1. Series: The sequence of numbers that is obtained by some particular predefined rule is called series, and by applying this predefined rule it is possible to find out the next term of the series.
2. Arithmetic series: An arithmetic series is one in which successive numbers are obtained by adding (or subtracting) a fixed number to the previous number.
3. Geometric series: A geometric series is one in which each successive number is obtained by multiplying (or dividing) a fixed number by the previous number.
4. Series of squares, cubes, etc: These series can be formed by squaring or cubing every successive number.
5. Mixed series: A mixed series means a series which is created according to any non-conventional rule.
• Two-Tier Arithmetic Series: A two-tier arithmetic series is one in which the differences of successive numbers themselves form an arithmetic series. For example, 2,5,10,17,26,37 is an example of two-tier arithmetic series. The difference of successive terms is 3,5,7,9,11….. which is an arithmetic series.
• Three-Tier Arithmetic Series: In this series, the difference of successive numbers forms a two-tier arithmetic series, whose successive term’s differences, in turn, create an arithmetic series. For example, 340, 214, 124, 64, 28, 10 ….. is an example of Three-tier Arithmetic Series. The differences of successive terms are 126, 90, 60, 36, 18,…. The differences of successive terms of this new series are 36, 30, 24, 18,….. which is an arithmetic series.
• Arithmetic-Geometric Series: In this series, each successive term should be found by first adding a fixed number to the previous term and then multiplying it by another fixed number. For example, 4,10,22,46….. is an example of arithmetico-geometric series in which each successive term is obtained by first adding 1 to the previous term and then multiplying it by 2.
• Geometric-Arithmetic Series: This series is one in which each successive term is found by first multiplying (or dividing) the previous term by a fixed number and then adding (or deducting) another fixed number. For example, 5, 11, 29, 83…… is a geometric-arithmetic series as in this series each successive term is obtained by first multiplying the previous number with 3 and then subtracting 4 from it.
• Twin Series: In twin series, two series are packed in one.

Types Of Questions in Odd Man Out Series

There are mainly 3 types of questions asked in exams:

• Alphabet Classification
• Word Classification
• Number Classification

Alphabet Classification

In this type, a collection of out of orders letters containing three letters is kept together. To solve this firstly we have to analyse the pattern in which these letters are grouped. And after that we need to check the option which is different from the rest of the options. The option which doesn’t follow the pattern followed by others will be the right answer.

Example:

Find the odd man out.

1. RO
2. KH
3. IF
4. NL
5. GD

Answer: D

Explanation:

R-3O, K-3H I-3F, N-2L, G-3D

So the answer will be NL, which is choice (D).

Word Classification

In this category, various things which are related to common properties such as part of speech, places, livings, etc. are present. The odd one will be the one which is different from the above said.

Example:

Find the odd one among the following.

1. Snooty
2. Restrained
3. Sociable
4. Stand-offish

Answer: C

Explanation:

Here, choices (a), (b), and (d) belong to one group which signifies people who do not mix with society. The answer therefore, is option 3.

Number Classification

In number classification method a collection of numbers is there which follows the same arrangement. In this type we need to analyse the odd arrangement from the group of numbers.

These numbers may be related to a certain set i.e. they may be odd, even, coded binary digits etc. the one option which is not in a line with above rule, will be our answer. The subsequent tips are essential to examine the question.

• Keep in mind the simple logic first
• To check the linking among the given numbers?
• Connection among the numbers?
• Grouping of presumed numbers
• Go to step 2 if you don’t find the odd one in the first step.
• There are also various categories of numbers which comes under number series problems but not in odd man out problems so be clear and specific while solving these types of problems

Example:

Find the odd among the following.

1. 2011
2. 1101
3. 2111
4. 10001
5. 212

Explanation:

These numbers follow the binary coding. Let’s convert them into decimal.

2011 = 2 × 23 + 0 × 22 + 1 × 21 + 1 × 20

= 16 + 0 + 2 + 1= 19

1101 = 1 × 23 + 1 × 22 + 0 × 21 + 1 × 20

= 8 + 4 + 0 + 1= 13

2111 = 2 × 23 + 1 × 22 + 1 × 21 + 1 × 20

= 16 + 4 + 2 + 1= 23

10001 = 1 × 24 + 0 × 23 + 0 × 22 + 0 × 21 + 1 × 20

= 16 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 1= 17

212 = 2 × 22 + 1 × 21 + 2 × 20

= 8 + 2 + 2= 12

Option E, because 12 is not a prime number but all others are prime numbers.

Odd Man Out Series Questions And Answers

Ques1. Complete the series 2, 5, 9, 19, 37…….

1. 76
2. 74
3. 75
4. None of these.

Answer: Option 3

Explanation:The second number is one more than twice the first, 2 x 2 +1 = 5The third number is one less than twice the second, 5 x 2 -1 = 9The fourth number is one more than twice the third, 9 x 2 +1 = 19The fifth number is one less than twice the fourth. 19 x 2 – 1 = 37Therefore, the sixth number is one more than twice the fifth. So, the missing number: 37 x 2 + 1 = 75.

Ques2.  The next number of the sequence 0, 7, 26, 63……

1. 124
2. 126
3. 215
4. 217

Answer: Option 1

 Explanation:The terms of the given series are (13 – 1) = 1 -1 = 0, (23 – 1) = 8 – 1 = 7, (33 – 1) = 27 – 1 = 26, (43 -1) = 64 – 1 = 63…..So, the next term will be 53 – 1 = 125 – 1 = 124

Ques3. In the following number series, a wrong number is given. Find out that number
8, 18, 40, 86, 178, 370, 752.

1. 18
2. 178
3. 370
4. 40

Answer: Option 2

 Explanation:The given sequence isx 2 + 2 i.e. 8 x 2 + 2 = 16+2 = 18, x 2 + 4 i.e. 18 x 2+ 4 = 36+4 = 40, x 2 + 6 i.e. 40 x 2 + 6 = 80+6 = 86, x 2 + 8 i.e. 86 x 2 + 8 = 172+8 = 180, x 2 + 10 i.e. 180 x 2 + 10 = 360+10 = 370, x 2 + 12 i.e. 370 x 2 + 12 = 740+12 = 752.Hence, the number 178 is wrong, and it should be replaced by 180.

Ques4. Find out the missing number in the following sequence.
53, 44, 52,?, 51, 46.

1. 45
2. 61
3. 44

5. 43

Answer: Option 1

Explanation:In the given series, there are two sequences: 53, 52, 51, and 44,?, 46In the first sequence, each digit is decreased by 1 i.e. 53, 52, 51In the second sequence, each digit is increased by 1 44, 45, 46Therefore 45 is the missing number.
