Ratio: Ratio between two numbers a & b is expressed as a : b. It can also be expressed as a/b. The first term in a ratio is called antecedent and second term is called consequent.
Proportion: The equality of two ratios is called proportion.
a, b, c and d are in proportion, if a : b = c : d. It can also be expressed as a : b :: c : d
In any proportion, the first and fourth terms are called the extreme terms while the second and the third terms are called mean terms.
The problems on Ratio and Proportion can be easily solved using some below given some simple tricks.
Important Ratio and Proportion Tricks (अनुपात और समानुपात ट्रिक्स)
If A : B = a : b and B : C = c : d, then:-
- A : C = ac : bd
- A : B : C = ac : bc : bd
Example: If A : B = 4 : 5 and B : C = 6 : 7 then, find value of A : C ?
A : C = 4 x 6 : 5 x 7 = 24 : 35
उदाहरण: यदि A : B = 3 : 5 तथा B : C = 4 : 7 हो, तो A : B : C होगा –
A : B : C = 3 x 4 : 5 x 4 : 5 x 7 = 12 : 20 : 35
If pA = qB = rC, then:-
Example: If 4A = 3B = 5C, then, find value of A : B : C ?
उदाहरण: यदि A = B = C तो A : B : C का मान क्या होगा ?

If the sum of two numbers is ‘P’ and their difference is ‘Q’, then the ratio of numbers is given by (P + Q) : (P – Q)
Example: The sum of two numbers is 100 and their difference is 50. Then the ratio of the two numbers is
Ratio of the two numbers = (100 + 50) : (100 – 50) = 150 : 50 = 3 : 1
उदाहरण: दो संख्याओं का योगफल 40 हो एवं उनका अंतर 4 है दोंनों संख्याओं का अनुपात बताऐं |
आवश्यक अनुपात = (40 + 4) : (40 – 4) = 44 : 36 = 11 : 9
A number which when added to the terms of the ratio a : b make it equal to the ratio c : d, then
Example: What must be added to each term of the ratio 7 : 11 so as to make it equal to 3 : 4?
उदाहरण: यदि किसी संख्या को अनुपात 11 : 23 के पदों में जोडने से अनुपात बदलकर 4 : 7 रह जाता है तो वह संख्या क्या होगी?

Example: What number should be subtracted from both term of the ratio 15 : 19 in order to make it 3 : 4?
